Life Happened: Joy amid Chaos

“You’re laughing!” my then 7-year-old said matter-of-factly as I chuckled at her antics while we drove around running errands. “Yes, I am,” I replied, puzzled why she would make that statement. “I’ve never seen you laugh before,” she added with innocent honesty. Her casual remarks landed with unexpected weight, resonating deeply within me. The moment was so poignant—a simple exchange that carries a profound message. Children often have an amazing way of pointing out truths we don’t notice in ourselves.
I remembered a comment from one of my high school classmates, with whom I connected after 30 years. She said, “You look like the same bubbly girl…”, and I remember being perplexed that she would think I was “bubbly” because I did not remember that version of me.
Between that bubbly girl from high school to a mom who rarely laughs, life happened!
The Weight of “Life Happened”:
Life has a way of quietly reshaping us, often without our notice. ‘Life Happened’ encompasses those significant experiences—challenges, responsibilities, or even traumas—that gradually dimmed the vibrant light of that bubbly spirit. The laughter and lightness didn’t disappear all at once; they faded, shadowed by the relentless demands of adulthood and the unspoken belief that joy must yield to practicality.
I could vaguely recall the girl I once was—the one who laughed without restraint, carefree and full of possibilities. That version of me feels like a distant memory, replaced by a person shaped by life’s trials and lessons. Somewhere along the way, that girl got lost in the folds of responsibility, and her laughter grew quieter, almost imperceptible.
The emotional impact:
This interaction with my child brought forth the realization how others often observe things we ourselves might overlook—like how rarely we might allow ourselves to express joy outwardly while our inner world is in chaos; how experiencing joy can sometimes get buried under the weight of responsibilities, challenges, and routines. Her words were disarmingly candid, and their impact comes from the stark contrast between her light-hearted remark and the emotional weight it carries for me as an adult. It’s the kind of exchange that lingers in your mind and gently nudges you to reconsider the small, everyday ways we connect with others.
A Journey of Rediscovery:
This was an opportunity for reflection: When did I stop laughing? Why? And how can I find my way back?
Finding answers may not be so easy. However, it gives an opportunity to be mindful of the small moments in life that give us joy regardless of the life stresses we are experiencing.
It is a reminder to reflect on small moments of joy and to let go and laugh more often. This could lead to a commitment to embrace life with more light-heartedness again.
The journey to rediscovery is bittersweet, but it holds hope. Awareness is the first step toward transformation—and it reminds us to cherish the small moments of joy that life offers, even amid chaos.

love this! 😁
